This week was the second consecutive week I conducted practice for both Damen 1 and 2 (1st and 2nd Women's teams). We focused on the fundamentals of hitting, throwing and fielding. It was cool to watch things finally come together; the women were excited to learn new things and training went well.
Our first test came on Saturday when our head coach (Shirley) had to go home early due to illness leaving myself in charge during the second game with the help of the coach for Damen 2, Yvonne.
Bouncing back from a loss in the first game, we were able to rack up enough points to hold the Brauweiler Raging Abbots in our 14-17 victory.
The second game was fun! The girls were relaxed and enjoyed themselves the entire time. Although coaching from third base was rare to me at first, it felt more and more comfortable as the game continued. We executed on defense and offense, and we were able to win! We worked together and stayed positive.
Unfortunately, things did not go as well for us when we played returning Deutschland Women's Softball Champions, Wessling Vermins. We lost both games, but we never gave up. Instead, we battled until the last out and this was a big accomplishment.
A couple of weeks ago during the first game we played together, things were not as solid when we were losing to returning League Champions, Neunkirchen Nightmares. After the Nightmares scored their first five runs, our heads were down and it was silent on the field. We never put up a fight because we had no confidence in ourselves.
Yesterday, however, was a different story. Although the score was not in our favor, we still played hard and had fun. It pleases me to say that the confidence of my teammates has definitely improved since that first game.
It made me smile to notice our improvement because it showed that anything is possible if we put our minds to it. We may not win many games, but if we stick together, stay positive and remain confident, we will get better and better as the season progresses.
I cannot wait to see what our next improvement will be during our next game on July 23 against the Hamburg Knights.
Until then, we will utilize our time to prepare through diligence at practice and repetition of good mechanics. Whatever happens from here on, I hope we understand the importance of confidence in ourselves and our team. The first step to success is confidence; the rest will follow as long as we continue to put in the dedication and hard work.
